What is turmeric used for

Turmeric is a tropical plant belonging to an ancient root of the ginger family.  It is widely spread out and cultivated throughout the world, especially in the tropical regions and goes by different names in different cultures and countries.

In North India turmeric is known as “Haldi”.

In India, mostly everyone is familiar with turmeric as it is commonly used as spices in Indian cuisine. It gives a distinctive bright fresh yellow coloring and mustard like aroma.

People of ancient India believed that turmeric contained a divine healing power. For thousand years it has been used as medicine to heal many sickness and diseases. (1 )

The Turmeric is known to help in strengthening of the cell walls and overall immune system of the body.

Due to its antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory properties, it has been widely used for many medicinal purposes.

It is found to help fight cancer, lessen cholesterol levels, control diabetes and promote healthy immune and digestive systems.

Many people also used turmeric for relieving gas, dispelling worms; improve digestion, relieving arthritis, regulating menstruation and various other respiratory conditions.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Turmeric is used to treat a disease associated with stomach pain.

Turmeric is also used by Unani practitioners to expel phlegm as well as to open blood vessel to enhance the blood circulation.

When turmeric is incorporate into food, including rice and bean dishes, it helps to keep your digestive system function smoothly and reduce gas and bloating. 

It has been traditionally used for treating dyspepsia. Dyspepsia is a common condition of impaired digestion and causes abdominal pain, belching, nausea, vomiting and abdominal bloating.

Other Uses 

In some country such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan turmeric paste is used by women to remove superfluous hair. 

Turmeric is also used in India during the wedding ceremonies, it is believed to make the skin glow and keep harmful bacteria away from the body.

Today the extract turmeric is also used in skincare product; it can be found in the formulation of a variety of sunscreens and face creams. 

According to a particular study, Turmeric can significantly heighten the appearance of facial spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. (2)
