Dementia is a collective condition in a person affected by a host of symptoms caused by various diseases resulting in memory disorder, impaired reasoning and difficulties in communicating.  As a result, the patient’s personality, mood and behavior also can change.  It is a common condition of illness in old people but not necessarily a normal part of ageing or old age.   

Many younger people can also have the condition of dementia and having to accept it among young people may be really difficult. . Those people who have the symptoms of dementia before they hit 65 years of age are called ‘young onset dementia’ or ‘early onset of dementia’ also ‘working-age dementia.  Alzheimer’s disease is the most common disorder of dementia. Vascular dementia is the second most common dementia type( It is important to note that not all memory loss is dementia).

Causes of Dementia

It is mainly caused by neurodegenerative disease and death of brain cell. The human brain has a different distinct part, each of which has different functionality for carrying out different mind activities. When brain cells of a particular part are affected, that part refuses to perform to its normal functionality.

Some of the causes of dementia that cannot be reversed are:-

  • Parkinson’s disease. This disease occurred as a result of certain nerve cell that controls movement being affected. Some common symptoms are stiff muscle, slow movement and shaky of a body.
  • Vascular dementia .this conditions happen when the brain doesn’t get enough blood carrying the oxygen and nutrients it required that can often result in stroke. Some common symptoms are short term memory loss, hallucination mood swing, trouble in following normal daily activities, troubled concentration and planning activities.
  • It is the most common cause of Dementia.
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies.
  • The brain damage caused cannot be treated.

Some treatable causes of dementia are

  • Thyroid problems
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol,
  • Depression,
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Drug interaction and medication side effect
  • AIDS/HIV
  • Some brain tumours

Symptoms of Dementia

The symptoms of Dementia in both young and old people are more or less the same.  The most common symptoms of dementia are Impairment in thinking and judgment, Communication and language,  visual perception.

  • The trouble with memory or trouble with remembering can be an early sign of dementia. Some the patient can remember the memories of remote but not the memories of the recent past or the immediate preceding memory. Short-term memory
  • Another sign of early symptoms of dementia is struggling with the way to communicate the thoughts the way it is wanted to be conveyed. The patients find difficulty in immediately finding the rights words to communicate.
  • Mood swing is a common symptom of dementia. In many cases, depression can be a typical symptom of dementia. Changes in personality because the thought process and judgment is affected.
  • Apathy or listlessness. Anhedonia, losing interest in things that he previously used to love. Emotionally cold and lethargic. Emotionally distant from family and friends.
  • Confusion, perplexity, hallucination and paranoia.
  • Trouble recognizing places and people or disorientation of places
  • Negligence of self sand safety

Diagnosis of Young Onset of Dementia

There is no on one test that diagnoses of young onset dementia.  There can be cases when dementia is diagnosed but not the type known. Therefore, it is a must to have a comprehensive medical evaluation and multiple examinations done. When you suspect that something is beginning to go unusual with you, it is a wise choice to maintain a symptoms dairy to help you in accurate diagnosis of early onset of Dementia.

It is best to get it diagnosed as early as possible as early diagnosis can help you take early supportive services and medical treatment.
