The Real Reasons Why People Get Fat

The common reason given by people about getting fat is that they eat more calories and exercise too little.

However, there are other factors that influence to cause someone to gain more body fat than others.

In this article, we’ll discuss some reasons why some people gain fat more easily than others.

Genetics, Your Weight Destiny

Studies show that some people are genetically destined to become obese, as the fat genes are usually inherited from their parents.

There can be no doubt that people share half of their genetic makeup with each of their parents.

Some people are predestined to be skinny, fat, tall, or broad –shouldered because of genetic reasons.

However, having obesity gene doesn’t necessarily mean you are fat for genetic reasons. It could also result from different factors.

Children adopt the basis of their eating habits from their parents when they were growing up.

Once I came across a woman in her mid-forties, who is supposed to be obese and overweight, but wasn’t.

She has two brothers, who weighed almost the same, weighing over 400 lbs.  She also has a kid, weighed over 350 lbs.

In this case; her genetic is designed to obese. One day I asked her, How come you are not fat?  She says

“I thought it had to do with the fact that I ran for an hour and a half before I go to a gym six days a week”.

This clearly shows that it is possible to maintain a healthy weight even if you carry the obesity gene.

Too much eating and not enough physical activity

People gain weight when they eat too many calories and not using enough physical activities to burn them.

So also people lose weight when they burn more calories than they consume.

To maintain your weight, the amount of energy that goes into your body has to balance the amount that goes out, or the extra energy that goes into your system is stored as fat.

Lack of physical activity is another significant factor leads to obesity

Modern technology has made our lives easier before there was a radio but we have television now.  Watching television on the couch and eating unhealthy snacks has become a habit for many.

When there was no telephone, when we wanted to talk to someone we would just walk over to that person’s house and talk to him.

People use a car rather walking, even if they were to go for short distance or an elevator rather than walking up the stairs.

We rely on modern appliances too much rather than our muscles. This is another factor why people tend to gain more weight.

Lack of sleep Causes Obesity

According to research published in The American journal of Human biology lack of sleep increases the risk of obesity. (1)

It shows that the less you sleep, the more likely you are to end up eating more calories and carbohydrate which can lead to overeating and gain weight.

Sleep helps to maintain balancing our appetite and keep the optimal levels of ghrelin (hungry) and leptin (full) hormones.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This is the reason why you feel hungrier when you don’t get enough sleep.
