Do not underestimate the importance of healthy diet for kidney disease.  Diet plays a critical role in preserving and improving the kidneys. 

Without a proper diet, most of the efforts to preserve and improve the kidney function will have little long term effect.

Diet for Kidney Disease That should be following if you have kidney disease

Consume low protein (eating a low protein diet will reduce the workload on the kidney), low phosphorus (diet high in phosphorus can cause your blood phosphorus level to be too high), low sodium, higher alkaline, high fiber, vegetarian, anti-oxidant diet and anti- inflammatory. 

To understand why you should follow the above diet plan, let’s discuss each of them briefly

Low protein diet

If you are suffering from kidney disease, it’s very important to eat low protein diet. The consumption of high protein can result a faster rate of declining kidney function.  

It is so because the protein can lead to accumulation of nitrogen waste products, urea, hydrogen ions, phosphate and inorganic ions which have to be eliminated or regulated by the kidney.

Low phosphorus

We need phosphorus to maintain our metabolism running smoothly and it plays an essential role in heart functioning through muscular contraction.

Yet the high consumption of phosphorus intakes can put more stress on the kidney and force them to work harder, which leads to a faster decline in its function.     

Since the vast majority of the daily potassium intake (90 %) occurs in the kidney, and only about 10 % being cleared by the gastrointestinal tract.

Low sodium

Sodium helps to control blood pressure and regulates many essentials part of our body. However, when you are suffering from kidney disease the extra sodium can build up in the body leading to fluid accumulation.

This can cause swollen ankles, puffiness, a rise in blood pressure and shortness of breath and fluid around your heart and lungs which can lead to heart failure.

Higher Alkaline

The kidneys have two very essential roles in maintaining the acid-base balance. When too many acids are building up in the body from acidic foods and the kidney cannot keep the balance, the results are inflammation, chronic illness and worsening of kidney function.  This is the reason why a higher alkaline food is required.

High Fiber

High fiber not only helps to guard cancer, heart disease but it also helps to improve kidney disease.  Experts recommend at least 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day from food.

Vegetarian

In general, animal sources of food such as dairy, meats including beef, lamb, goat, eggs and chicken have shown to decrease the kidney function once you are suffering from kidney disease. Try to limit animals product and focus more on a vegan diet.

Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Oxidant foods

One of the healthiest foods for people with kidney is anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant.

It helps to prevent or protect against undesirable fatty acid oxidation, a condition that occurs when the oxygen in your body reacts with fats in your blood and your cells.  

For instance, sesame oil has been shown to help protect and help injured kidneys recover because of the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits and ability to help control the body’s glucose level.
