Diabetes and sex Diabetes and sex have a correlation with each other, your diabetes can affect your sexual function. According to a particular study, men with type 2 diabetes are  three times more likely to have a sex problem than those without diabetes.

It is estimated that nearly 50% of the people with diabetes have trouble with sexual function. And this trouble usually comes in the form of erectile dysfunction. Erectile function is a condition where a man is unable to get or keep an erection for intercourse.

Why sex and diabetes are connected  is because diabetes can impair the parasympathetic nervous system, when this system is damaged, it can make difficult for men to get an erection for sexual intercourse. This can cause an unpleasant environment for the partner as it will cause an inability to achieve a firm  erection.

However, before accusing diabetes as the main culprit for causing  erectile dysfunction,  there are many others factors to consider, some of such  are

  • Hormonal deformities, it could be because of insufficient production of male hormone testosterone  or it can also result due to overproduction of a hormone from the pituitary gland, called prolactin
  • Injury to penis
  • Under certain medication such as antihypertensives and antidepressants
  • Restriction of blood supply to the penis due to blockage of the artery by peripheral vascular disease
  • It can also result from a certain lifestyle choice, smoking, unhealthy diet

Treatment of Erectile dysfunction for a diabetes patient

There are various ways to treat this problem,  some of which includes the following

Oral tablets

The most common drugs that are confirmed to  provide satisfactory erection for almost 70 to 80% of men  are Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. This drug belongs to the same family called phosphodiesterase inhibitors. These drugs function by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis when men become sexually aroused.

However, there are the possible side effects carries in these drugs such as lightheadedness, dizziness, facial flushing and indigestion.

Injection into the penis

You can inject Alprostadil straightforwardly into the penis to make an erection. Alprostadil is a compound that relaxes the veins in the penis to permit more stream, doesn’t require sexual stimulation in order to work.
